Crystalline Sponge Gold
Bogan and Baitelle Mine (B. B. Mine)
Colorado area, Whitlock Mining District, Bagby-Mariposa-Mount Bullion-Whitlock Mining District, Mariposa County, California, USA
Crystallized gold from this locality is exceptionally rare, coming from a long-forgotten mine that remained unknown to collectors for many years. This outstanding specimen showcases layered formations of sponge-like crystallized gold, creating a complex and visually engaging structure. On closer inspection, subtle flattened crystal faces can be seen reflecting light with a brilliance reminiscent of a faceted gemstone. The gold exhibits a rich, saturated color that enhances its natural beauty, while its elongated form gives the piece an impressive and commanding presence. Specimens from this mine are virtually unheard of in collections, as nearly all gold recovered during the early gold rush era was melted down, making surviving crystallized examples like this extraordinarily significant.
