Crystalline Sponge Gold

Bogan and Baitelle Mine (B. B. Mine)

Colorado area, Whitlock Mining District, Bagby-Mariposa-Mount Bullion-Whitlock Mining District, Mariposa County, California, USA

Crystallized gold from this locality is exceptionally rare, originating from a long-forgotten and historically unknown gold mine. This outstanding specimen showcases layered growth of sponge-like crystallized gold, creating a complex and visually engaging structure. On close inspection, subtle flattened crystal faces can be seen catching and reflecting light with a brilliance reminiscent of a faceted gem. The gold exhibits a rich, saturated color that enhances its overall presence, while its broad, spread-out crystallized surface area gives the piece impressive size and display impact. Specimens from this mine are virtually unheard of in the collector market, as nearly all material recovered during the early gold rush was melted down, making this a truly remarkable and historic example.
