Crystalline Sponge Gold

Bogan and Baitelle Mine (B. B. Mine)

Colorado area, Whitlock Mining District, Bagby-Mariposa-Mount Bullion-Whitlock Mining District, Mariposa County, California, USA

Crystallized gold from this locality is exceptionally rare, coming from a long-forgotten and historically obscure mine. This impressive specimen features layered, sponge-like gold growth that creates a complex and highly engaging structure. On closer inspection, subtle flattened crystal faces reflect light with a bright, gem-like brilliance. The gold displays a rich, saturated color that enhances its visual appeal, while the broad spread of crystallized surface area gives the piece strong presence and excellent display size. Specimens from this mine are virtually unknown on the collector market, as most material recovered during the early gold rush was melted down making this a truly rare and historically significant example.
