Crystallized Gold - Epimorph
Agua Fria, Mariposa, California U.S.A.

This native gold crystal displays robust, thick crystals with a unique and highly aesthetic epimorph crystal morphology. The gold exhibits a bright yellow hue characteristic of specimens from Mariposa County. Its unusual crystal formations feature large, flat, elongated branching crystals with angular, geometric shapes known as epimorph crystals. Uncommon epimorph crystals form when gold crystallizes as a coating over an original quartz crystal. Over time, acidic fluids dissolve the underlying mineral, leaving behind the noble metal as a perfectly shaped shell or impression of the vanished crystal. Between the larger crystals are clusters of microcrystals, with some areas showing secondary growth extending from the larger formations. The specimen’s incredible aesthetic appeal is enhanced by its resemblance to sea coral, with beautiful geometric patterns and subtle dendritic growth. This gold specimen is an excellent representation of the unique crystallization found at its locality.
