Dodecahedral Hoppered Crystal

Serra do Caldeirão, Pontes e Lacerda, Mato Grosso Brazil

This remarkable natural gold specimen displays a truly unique and magnificent crystal habit. The native gold developed as a slightly modified dodecahedral crystal, where growth was interrupted before the crystal could fully mature into a complete dodecahedral habit giving the specimen its distinctive and uncommon form. Within the structure, the interior reveals sharp hoppered crystals, often referred to as chevron crystals, exhibiting exceptional luster across their brilliantly reflective surfaces. The gold displays a richly saturated buttery yellow color typical of the locality, indicative of its very high purity. The reverse side is equally impressive, showcasing additional chevron crystal development accompanied by stacked spinel twinned octahedral crystals along the sides, culminating in a well-defined octahedral termination at the tip. A fascinating and highly aesthetic example from this locality, this specimen represents a standout addition to any serious gold or mineral collection.
