Crystallized Gold with Limonite Matrix
Folsom Mining District, California
The gold specimen here displays thick angular gold crystals with lustrous flat faces. Its surrounding matrix consists of mostly limonite which is an iron oxide mineral and native gold crystals spread throughout. In some areas the gold has developed into a spinel twin reverse hollow cube crystals with small, modified crystals that branch out displaying a slightly dendritic pattern. The blocky crystal habits and lustrous crystal faces is a rare example for its locality.
