Upon close examination, the geometric hollow cast is clearly visible, formed when quartz crystals originally grew first and the gold later enveloped them, creating a thick shell of native metal. Over time, the enclosed quartz crystal dissolved away, leaving behind the hollow gold cast that preserves its original crystal shape. Although gold commonly occurs with quartz, only a very small number of specimens experience the precise combination of heat, pressure, and gold-rich mineralizing fluids necessary to produce an epimorph. These extraordinary geological conditions make gold epimorphs highly sought after by advanced mineral collectors.
