Gold Crystals on Iron Oxide Matrix
Placer County, California
This unusually rare gold specimen has the most unique mineral composition ever seen from California. Its matrix is composed of iron oxide a form of limonite, native arsenic, and native lead. These three minerals occurring with gold is incredibly rare and never found in other locality in California. The native gold crystals are very high purity about 95% pure gold content and 5% silver content naturally occurring. Due to such high concentration of gold the color is a worm saturated yellow with really good luster. Its crystal morphology is unique as well with some being modified flat octahedral crystals and other grown as rich clusters of lustrous leafy gold crystals. The gold is visible on all sides and is a great representations of its locality.
