Gold Crystals on Quartz
Winnemucca Mining District, Humboldt County, Nevada, U. S. A.
This specimen is a perfect example of natural process called hydrothermal gold deposition where the gold has deposited on the quartz as a hot fluid then gradually cooled, forming native gold crystals near the surface of the white quartz matrix. The gold crystals are slightly octahedral and others slightly cubed modified crystal habits. The gold displays good luster and is almost an electrum type gold where the gold has formed into a natural gold-silver alloy which is rare in nature but an often natural occurrence from this locality. On the back side are quartz crystal points formed which is unusual and appealing to the overall specimen aesthetics.
