Crystalline Sponge Gold
Bogan and Baitelle Mine
Colorado area, Whitlock Mining District, Bagby-Mariposa-Mount Bullion-Whitlock Mining District, Mariposa County, California, USA
Crystallized gold from this locality is exceptionally rare, originating from a long-forgotten and historically unknown gold mine. This outstanding specimen showcases layered growth of sponge-like crystallized gold, creating a complex and visually engaging structure. On close inspection, subtle flattened crystal faces can be seen catching and reflecting light with a brilliance reminiscent of a faceted gem. The gold exhibits a rich, saturated color that enhances its overall presence, while its broad, spread-out crystallized surface area gives the piece impressive size and display impact. The white quartz matrix below also has a thick gold vein that runs through it also providing a beautiful contrast to the native gold on top. Nearly all material recovered during the early gold rush was melted down, making this a truly remarkable and historic example.
