Gold on Quartz Matrix

Eagles Nest Mine, Placer County, California

This rare and exceptional gold specimen is a classic example of crystallized gold, featuring elongated, branching crystals with sharp geometric textured surface and a bright metallic luster, all perched on a contrasting white quartz matrix. The branching gold crystals form a complex dome-like structure that covers much of the upper surface of the quartz. These crystals display multiple growth layers, with fine striations visible on their flattened, sharp-edged surfaces. Closer inspection reveals intricate spinel-twin formations, with elongated octahedral tips distributed across the bold gold crystal faces. The bright white quartz matrix provides a beautiful visual contrast and structural balance, enhancing the specimen’s overall appeal. Notably, some gold branches penetrate through the quartz and reappear on the lower side, where sharp, well-defined crystal tips are clearly visible. This specimen is an outstanding representative of gold from this classic locality and would make a significant addition to any serious mineral collection.
