Gold var. Electrum on Volcanic Host Rock Matrix
Olinghouse Mine Pah Rah Range, Washoe County, Nevada, USA
This incredibly large and rare specimen from the Olinghouse mine composed of sharp needle like gold crystals and wire gold. The crystals are extremely lustrous on all sides. Some of the crystals have grown into thick and large leaf-like Electrum plates. The gold is a result of a hydrothermal event which deposited the molten gold and crystallized in the volcanic cavities. This specimen is an extremely rich vein of gold which runs through the volcanic matrix and is packed with gold on all sides. This type of gold is called Electrum due to its high silver alloy content which is what is usually produced from the Olinghouse district. The volcanic matrix also has large plates of leaf gold that are slightly visible in the quartz and calcite veins. We estimate that more than 60% of the weight is gold as the whole volcanic matrix is connected with gold crystals. Specimens are no longer being produced from this mine and are a classic to collectors and now is your change to acquire a coveted specimen form a famous locality.
