Sponge Gold Cluster
Belshazzar Mine, Quartzburg Mining District, Boise County, Idaho
This remarkable native gold specimen showcases a dense, interlaced cluster of sturdy crystals that come together in a compact, three-dimensional formation. Its structure is composed of an intricate maze of sponge-like growths that twist and merge, producing a highly detailed and visually striking network. Several crystals are sharply defined, with some projecting outward as short, delicate wire-like branches. Small sections of white quartz matrix remain attached, with a few fine gold wires threading into the quartz itself. The gold displays a vivid, buttery-yellow color and a brilliant metallic luster classic exceptional quality. Specimens from the Belshazzar Mine are exceptionally scarce, and those exhibiting this rare combination of sponge-like and wire crystal habits are among the most coveted forms of natural gold.
